Screen

Information on the main features of the screen – slab, backlight, resolution, frequency/refresh rate.

Screen size class as declared by the manufacturer. Often, it is the rounded value of the actual size of the diagonal in inches.

Approximate diagonal size of the screen. If the manufacturer does not provide this information, the diagonal is calculated from the width and height of the screen.

Approximate screen width. If the manufacturer does not provide this information, the width is calculated from the diagonal and the relationship.

Approximate screen height. If the manufacturer does not provide this information, the height is calculated from the diagonal and the.

There are different display technologies. Chas a own characteristics – vision angles, color reproduction, response time, brightness/contrast rate, production cost, etc. The display quality depends directly on the type of the slab used.

Slabs 6, 8, and 10 bits are the most widely used to represent each RGB component of the pixel. They offer colors of 18, 24 and 30 bits, respectively.

Frame Rate Control (FRC) or temporal traming is a method that allows pixels to display more shades of colors. With a rapid cyclical switching between different color tones, an illusion for a new intermediate tone is created. For example, using FRC, a 6 -bit slab is capable of displaying 16.7 million colors, which are typical for 8 -bit tiles, instead of 262,200 standard colors. There are different algorithms.

The maximum number of colors that the screen can reproduce depends on the type of the slab used and the technologies for improving color such as FRC.

The relationship between the horizontal and the vertical screen. Some of the widely used standard formats are 4: 3, 5: 4, 16: 9 and 16:10.

Information on the number of pixels on the horizontal and vertical screen. A higher resolution allows the display of a more detailed and better quality image.

The drilling step (pitch) indicates the distance between the centers of two neighboring pixels. In screens, which have a native resolution (TFT, for example), the drilling step depends on the resolution and size of the screen.

Information on the number of pixels in a unit of length. With the decrease in screen size and increased resolution, pixel density increases.

The percentage ratio between the approximate surface, taken by the active part of the screen, and the total frontal area.

DCI P3 is a colority space introduced in 2007 by the SMPTE. It is used in digital cinema and has a much wider gamut than the SRGB.

HDR expands the contrast (maximum lumnosity and the lowest levels of the black) and the color palette to get more details in the whole image – from the darkest to the brightest, which helps to obtain a more realistic image.

Information on the maximum horizontal vision angle, in which the image on the screen is of acceptable quality.

Samsung QE55S95B test: Samsung’s first QD-Oled TV brings together the best of technologies

Writing note: 5 out of 5

The Samsung S95B is the first QD-Oled TV from the Korean manufacturer. A model associating quantum boxes (quantum dot) with individual management of the backlight of OLED technology to provide a precise, precise image, with deep blacks. An entire program.

Presentation

The QE55S95B is Samsung’s first TV to exploit an QD-Oled slab for Quantum Dot Oled-Sony, however had the premiere of this technology with its Bravia A95K television, which is all the more funny since the QD-Oled slab is Made by Samsung Display, a subsidiary of Samsung. This 55-inch QD-Oled slab displays an ultra HD definition and works between 48 and 120 Hz. It promises the best of both worlds, namely a high brightness peak thanks to the use of quantum boxes (quantum dot) and an infinite contrast thanks to the individual management of each pixel oled. Samsung TV requires, we find the Tizen house system in its version 6 with its new bulky home page. It can also count on an audio system 2.2.2 of 60 W, four HDMI 2 inputs 2.1 and a remote control with solar recharge.

The Samsung QE55S95B is sold around 2000 €. It is also available in 65 inch version, or around 165 cm, under the reference QE65S95B at a price of € 2800. For the moment, no larger version is planned. If this size seems insufficient, you will have to turn to the models equipped with an LG Display slab of 77 (1196 cm), 83 (211 cm) and soon 97 inches (243 cm).

Writing note: 5 out of 5

Image quality

The Samsung Display QD-Oled slab is satisfied with three subpixels (red, green and blue) arranged in a triangle, while the LG Display OLED tiles operate a structure with four sub-pixels (red, green, blue and white ) aligned horizontally. This three-sub-pixel structure also differs from the pentile arrangement used by Samsung on OLED screens of smartphones, where certain sub-pixels are shared between two pixels.

The viewing angles are simply excellent, since there is almost no variation in brightness at 45 ° (less than 5 %). It is much better than the best LCD televisions, with which we had measured a loss of 35 % on the Q950TS, 40 % on the 900R and 45 % on the Qn95B, the Ultra HD MINI-LED model Samsung in 2022. The QD-Oled slab offers the luxury of doing better than the OLED with a loss of 18 % brightness at 45 °, on the LG 65C2 for example.

As always, Filmmarker mode offers the best image quality. With this mode, the TV has a very well calibrated image. The temperature curve on the whole spectrum, measured at 7170 k on average, is a little far from the 6,500 k of reference, which results in a slightly cold rendering. The gamma curve is however perfectly stable, with an average of 2.39 perfectly in line with the reference value (2.4). Finally, with a medium delta e measured at 3.2, the colors are very well reproduced. We remain above the threshold value of 3 below which the colors are considered to be perfectly faithful to those sent by the source. On this point, the QD-Oled TV is doing better (Delta E Middle at 2.6), but it has a price.

As always, the contrast provided by this OLED panel is considered to be infinite. Indeed, even with a white calibrated at 150 cd/m², the black is measured at 0 CD/m² (our probe cannot measure a black less than 0.0049 CD/m²). This contrast is still as impressive and allows you to enjoy all the nuances, even in the full darkness.

In 2022, high -end Samsung televisions inherited the 4K Processor 4K neural processor, an evolution of the Neo Quantum. The differences are lean and the scaling engine, already very efficient last year, is just as much. In Filmmaker – our favorite to respect the fidelity of the image -, the scale of HD and Full HD content on this ultra HD slab is very soft. You have to go into standard mode to exploit the processor scaling potential, but loyalty is no longer there.

The motion xcelerator turbo+ motion compensation system is efficient and contributes to producing, thanks to the 100/120 Hz slab, a clear image in motion. The rendering with automation adjustment plus on automatic is good, but it is preferable to use personalized settings in order to limit the camcorder effect. Remember that in filmmaker mode, the movement compensation system is disabled.

Hdr

The Samsung Qe55S95B is compatible with HDR10, HLG and HDR10+, but it still ignores the Dolby Vision.

The HDR rendering is flawless. The reference eotf curve is perfectly followed up to 50 % luminance. Beyond that, the TV smooths the curve to keep details in the very bright scenes to its maximum capacities. With an average delta e measured at 2.7, the colors can be considered as faithful to those sent by the source. The peak of brightness is measured at 972 cd/m², a figure higher than that of most OLED televisions (around 750 cd/m² or 802 cd/m² for the last LG 65C2), but equivalent to what the best OLED televisions like the PANASONIC 65JZ1500 with its peak of brightness at 965 cd/m². Always lower than that of the best LCD televisions (Samsung Qe65qn95b with more than 1400 cd/m² or the Sony 75Z9J with 2260 cd/m²), this peak of brightness still allows to enjoy a beautiful dynamic of the image, especially using deep blacks, and in the end to highlight HDR content. The coverage of the colorimetric space is excellent, since the Samsung S95B displays 98 % of the colors of the DCI-P3 space, mainly used in the contents of the cinema and the TV series, and more than 80 % of the Colorimetric Space.2020, much more than the coverage offered by OLED models (just over 70 %).
