What is the difference between 4G and 5G ?

The 4G and 5G networks are complementary: 5G provides a flow up to 10 times faster than 4G and better responsiveness. The 5G network is deployed as a priority in dense areas where the mobile network is in great demand.

How to know if I capture 5G ?

To find out if you use a 5G network, when the phone will be connected to the 5G network, a 5G pictogram will appear on your phone.

In addition, it is necessary to have 3 elements:
• A 5G compatible terminal such as 5G compatible smartphones that have been marketed at SFR since October 2019
• a 5G package currently offered by SFR or a SFR recharging the 5G compatible card
• to be covered by the 5G network

What are the advantages of 5G ?

“Very good blanket” : you should be able to telephone and exchange SMS outside the buildings, and, in most cases, inside the buildings

“Good coverage” : you should be able to telephone and exchange SMS outside the buildings in most cases, and, in some cases, inside buildings

“Limited coverage” : you should be able to telephone and exchange SMS outside the buildings in most cases, but probably not inside the buildings

“No cover” : It is very unlikely that you can establish a communication, whether inside or outside the buildings

“5G coverage” : You should be able to exchange data in 5G outside the buildings in most cases 5G with different performance depending on the frequencies used, the theoretical maximum drop -down flow of 2 GB/S (Association of 4G and 5G frequencies in the zones Covered) in 3.5GHz frequency band and the theoretical maximum descendant of 995 Mb/s in frequency band 2100 MHz.

“4G coverage” : you should be able to exchange data in 4G outside the buildings in most cases

“3G coverage” : you should be able to exchange 3G data outside the buildings in most cases

“No cover” : It is very unlikely that you can exchange data, whether inside or outside the buildings.

The information on the coverage is issued as an indication and does not have a contractual value. The coverage areas are simulated in a computer way, it is therefore possible that certain inaccuracies exist. In addition, the coverage can vary over time, due to many factors: the season, weather conditions, the number of users, the appearance of an obstacle. Finally, the coverage inside the buildings can be altered depending on the building materials used, the presence of windows and the location of the phone inside the building. The card thus reflects an average estimate of the coverage inside the buildings, which may, in some cases, be less good.

The availability of the service can be strongly affected by the type and sensitivity of the terminal used. In this regard, the cards are simulated for an average terminal sensitivity.

Our SFR mobile networks map is based on mobile signal propagation algorithms from the relay antennas. It is based on data regulators of telecoms (Arcep, ANFR) and is developed by our R&D team in partnership with Inria.

SFR is the third operator to have the most 5G antennas with a total of 12,119 branches spread over 9,121 sites. The 5G coverage of SFR is provided by 6142 antennas at 3.5 GHz and 5977 antennas at 2.1 GHz . You will find the whole 5G SFR card above to view or are located the antennas of the operators.

With a coverage rate of 94.29% in 4G mobile internet network in France, SFR displays the best result among the four major mobile operators. The operator which covers the least the French territory in 4G remains free mobile (90.26%).

Offering a 4G coverage of 94.29%, SFR deployed 25,156 4G relay antennas in France, which places it 3rd in the classification of operators. 25,244 3G branches were deployed by SFR.

29,230 municipalities are covered by the 4G SFR network

SFR is the operator which covers the largest number of French municipalities in a 4G mobile network. Of the 34,886 municipalities in mainland France, 29,230 are covered by the 4G SFR network. The operator also covers 31,904 municipalities in 3G. ADSL & Fiber zone estimates that a municipality is covered by the 4G mobile network of an operator when its coverage rate exceeds 95%.

In all of the municipalities of France, 385 of them are not covered by the 4G SFR network and 141 municipalities are not covered by the 3G SFR network. ZoneAdsl estimates that a municipality is not covered by the 4G mobile network of an operator as soon as its coverage rate is less than 50%.

What are the performance of the SFR network ?

SFR is third at the rank of French operators offering the best 4G network performance. Indoors (in buildings), SFR has speeds for download of 37.59 Mbit/s and 6.86 Mbit/s in upload. Outdoors (transport and streets), the flows are 7.87 Mbit/s in upload and 41.01 Mbit/s in Download.

How do NPERF cards work ?

Where the data comes from ?

The measures collected are carried out by users of the NPERF application. These are measures carried out in real conditions, directly in the field. If you want to participate too, just download the NPERF application to your smartphone. The more data there will be, the more complete the cards will be ! All tests are displayed on the card. Filtering rules are applied before performance calculations for publications.

How the updates are performed ?

Network cards are automatically updated by a robot every hour. The speed cards are updated every 15 minutes. The data is displayed for two years. After two years, the oldest data is removed from the cards, once a month.

What reliability, what clarification ?

The measurements are made on user terminals. The precision of geolocation depends on the quality of reception of the GPS signal at the time of the measurement. For coverage data, we keep that measures whose precision of geolocation is at a maximum of 50 meters. For flow data, this threshold rises to 200 meters.

How to get raw data ?

You want to obtain network coverage data or NPERF tests (flows, latency, navigation, video streaming) in CSV format in order to exploit them as you see fit ? No problem ! Contact us to get a quote.

A pro tool for visualization of the cover cards exist ?

Yes. This tool is mainly intended for mobile operators. It has been integrated into an existing cockpit already bringing together internet performance statistics from all operators in the country concerned as well as access to the results of debt tests and coverage data. These data can be visualized by applying filters by technology (no coverage, 2G, 3G, 4G, 4G, 5G), over a configurable period (only the last 2 months for example). It is a fabulous tool to follow the deployment of a new technology, monitor its competitors and detect white or gray areas.
